Akoibon – The Movie

Akoibon is a story set on a mysterious yet beautiful island in the Mediterranean. The central motif is that of revenge a woman is out to take on the hotel owner of the place where a motley group of people comes together. Yet, behind the revenge which is all too understandable, a number of stories unfold, and the situation, a number of people who do not really have much in common being forced to confront each other, is what takes the viewer`s attention.

A cast of very well-selected actors, among them director Edouard Baer, shows what could happen if people are thrown together having to face kind of a claustrophobic situation even if the whole surroundings seems perfect – or maybe, especially so. What is paradise, one is forced to wonder, what is hell? Hell, this could be people treating other people in an unfair or cruel manner, not giving a thought about their emotions etc. What is fascinating about this vaguely familiar story is the “internment” motif; you can find yourself in the middle of civilisation being surrounded by beauty yet feel trapped, with your ego being crushed or at least affected by people you did not even know existed a very short while ago.

This old topos of “the island”, is accentuated by a well-chosen cast that stands out for their individuality, leaving a strong impression on the movie-goers. Maybe this is a pan-European film, maybe it is very French, but in any case it is worth watching!
